Melissa brought her background of stage managing live theater to her role as Account Manager when she began at Security Signs in August of 2006. While signs can be much more complicated than managing West Side Story, they are far less dramatic than stage actors. During her time with us she has managed many regional and national accounts direct to the client and through national vendors. Her Portland Rock Gym project has recently been awarded first place in the Sign of the Times national design contest.
Melissa’s eight years in the sign industry has been in the dual role of Permit Specialist as well as Account Manager. Her experience with sign code in the 200 or so jurisdictions she’s worked with brings a different eye to her sign projects and proposals. It’s also inspired her focus on land use, being a part of the CEIC’s Land Use Committee, PBA’s Transportation Committee and the Division Design Initiative. She also lobbies to modernize sign codes in multiple jurisdictions.
She believes that the key to selling signs is to build a relationship and keep from ‘selling’ a client all together. Instead, Melissa finds a way to fit what Security Signs can offer to a client’s needs. Finding that perfect sign, the one that acts as the welcoming handshake to a business doesn’t need to be ‘sold’, it needs to be loved.
Melissa studied English at the University of Washington (Go Huskies!). You may see her at lunches or meetings knitting away at her latest scarf, or at AM Boot Camp carrying something heavy while running around SE Portland.
